U.S. military forces are preparing for a potential operation against Iran that could last several weeks, according to two anonymous U.S. administration officials who spoke to Reuters.

Sources indicate that planning intensified following statements by U.S. President Donald Trump, who remarked that a change of power in the Islamic Republic "seems like the best thing that could happen." However, the American leader did not specify who could lead the country, only mentioning the existence of "suitable people."

The White House announced the deployment of a second aircraft carrier to the Middle East, along with fighter jets, destroyers, and thousands of troops. White House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly stated that the president "has all options on the table" regarding actions toward Iran. The Pentagon declined to comment on the situation.

According to sources, current plans are significantly more complex than previous operations. While the June 2025 Operation Midnight Hammer primarily targeted nuclear infrastructure, potential targets now may include government institutions and facilities linked to security forces.

The U.S. anticipates a likely response from Tehran, which could lead to a prolonged exchange of strikes. During a visit to Fort Bragg, Trump stated that negotiating with Iran is difficult and sometimes "it's necessary to instill fear."

The newest aircraft carrier, USS Gerald R. Ford, is being dispatched to the region to join the already deployed USS Abraham Lincoln. Estimates suggest the ship will take about a week to reach the deployment zone from the Caribbean Sea.

Despite military preparations, diplomatic efforts continue. Another round of negotiations is scheduled for next week in Geneva. Sources report that the U.S. delegation will be represented by special envoys Steve Whitkoff and Jared Kushner, with the meeting with the Iranian side to be mediated by Oman.
