A second fatal case of Nipah virus has been recorded in India. The deceased was a nurse who cared for the so-called "index patient."

According to sources, the 25-year-old hospital staff member contracted the virus in January through contact with an infected patient. After her condition deteriorated, she fell into a coma lasting nearly a month and was in critical condition.

It is noted that later tests for the Nipah virus showed negative results, but the patient developed a severe lung infection. The woman was placed on a ventilator, but could not be saved—she died from complications caused by the infection. It is reported that her immunity weakened sharply amid the illness, followed by cardiac arrest.

The Nipah virus is transmitted to humans from animals, primarily bats and pigs. The infection affects the respiratory system and can cause encephalitis. According to expert estimates, without timely medical assistance, the mortality rate can reach 75%.
