A high-profile court case has concluded in Uzbekistan's Bukhara region, where a businessman was found guilty of causing significant environmental damage. The head of a company conducting earthworks on the Jondor canal in Alat district was convicted of mass destruction of valuable tree species.

The investigation revealed that the company illegally cut down 154 turanga trees, a species unique to arid regions and protected by the state. Environmental experts assessed the damage at a staggering 1.302 billion Uzbek soums (approximately $120,000).

The Bukhara Interdistrict Economic Court, after reviewing the case, issued a decisive ruling. The defendant is required to pay the full amount of damages to the state. This precedent sends a strong signal to businesses: ignoring environmental laws and illegally cutting valuable timber now results in multi-billion soum fines that can threaten a company's financial stability.
