Jean-Luc Melenchon, the prominent figure of France's left-wing Unbowed party (LFI), has declared his candidacy for the 2027 presidential election. The 74-year-old politician made the announcement on TF1 television on Sunday, stating, "Yes, I am a candidate."

This marks Melenchon's fourth presidential campaign, following his runs in 2012, 2017, and 2022. In the last election, he secured 22% of the vote, finishing third and narrowly missing the runoff by just 1.2 percentage points behind far-right leader Marine Le Pen. His vote share has steadily increased from 11% in 2012.

LFI has been a vocal critic of Israel and its military campaign in Gaza, which Melenchon has described as genocide. He has called for the suspension of the European Union's association agreement with Israel and backed Spain's stance against the US-Israel war on Iran. The party advocates for strong environmental regulations and higher taxes on the wealthy.

The 2027 race is wide open as President Emmanuel Macron is term-limited and cannot run. Le Pen faces a potential ban from politics due to an ongoing legal challenge. The election is scheduled for April 2027, with a possible runoff two weeks later if no candidate secures a majority in the first round.

Macron's centrist Renaissance party has seen its support erode amid economic and governmental crises. The 2024 legislative elections failed to produce a majority for any party, leading to political instability and frequent changes in government. Melenchon's LFI is the largest party in the New Popular Front coalition, the third-largest bloc in the National Assembly.
