Uzbekistan has registered its first tirzepatide-based drug for the treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus — Sejaro. The registration certificate was obtained by the company Geropharm, allowing it to enter the republic's market.

The drug contains the active ingredient tirzepatide, which acts on receptors of two incretin hormones. According to the company, the therapy promotes weight loss, reduction of visceral adipose tissue volume, and waist circumference.

Particular attention from the medical community is focused on tirzepatide's effect on visceral adipose tissue — the most dangerous type of fat that accumulates around internal organs and increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases.

The efficacy of tirzepatide was evaluated in international clinical trials. According to results, in patients without diabetes, the drug reduced body weight by up to 22.5% over 72 weeks, and waist circumference by an average of 14.6 centimeters.

The registration comes amid high obesity prevalence in Uzbekistan. According to the World Health Organization and the Committee for Sanitary-Epidemiological Welfare and Public Health, 64% of the adult population is overweight, and one in five residents suffers from obesity. Since 1980, the prevalence of this disease in the republic has increased by 36%.

Sejaro is manufactured as a pre-filled pen for subcutaneous injection in six dosages ranging from 2.5 to 15 milligrams. The drug is administered once a week, with gradual dose escalation as prescribed by a physician.

The medication is available by prescription only, and the decision to initiate therapy is made by a medical professional based on indications and individual patient characteristics.
