US President Donald Trump is reportedly planning to cut the number of American troops stationed in Germany, following critical remarks by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz regarding the Iran war. Trump allegedly called Merz's statements uninformed and threatened to reduce the US military presence.
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered the withdrawal of approximately 5,000 American troops over the next six to twelve months. Currently, between 35,000 and 39,000 US soldiers are stationed in Germany, along with at least 10,000 additional military personnel.
Ramstein Air Base in Rhineland-Palatinate is the largest US military installation outside the United States. It serves as a logistics hub for troops and equipment destined for the Middle East, Africa, and Eastern Europe. Ramstein also houses the US Air Force headquarters in Europe and NATO's command center for airspace surveillance.
Spangdahlem Air Base, located about 120 kilometers northwest of Ramstein, primarily conducts combat missions. A fighter squadron of approximately 20 F-16 jets is stationed there, serving as a rapid reaction force to secure NATO's eastern flank.
Stuttgart and Wiesbaden host key strategic commands: Stuttgart is home to the US European Command (EUCOM) and US Africa Command (AFRICOM), while Wiesbaden houses the headquarters of US Army Europe and Africa. These bases also coordinate Western arms deliveries and training programs for Ukrainian forces.
In Bavaria, the Grafenwöhr and Hohenfels training areas form the US military's most important training center in Europe. Grafenwöhr features one of the world's largest live-fire training grounds, while Hohenfels conducts realistic combat exercises with civilian actors. Thousands of NATO soldiers train there annually.
Büchel Air Base is widely believed to be Germany's only remaining nuclear weapons storage site, though neither the US nor Germany has officially confirmed this. The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) estimates that 15 to 20 tactical nuclear bombs are stored there under NATO's nuclear sharing program.
US bases are a significant economic factor for Germany. Over 10,000 Germans work directly for the US military, and an estimated 70,000 jobs are indirectly tied to base-related services. The military community contributes up to €3.5 billion ($4.1 billion) annually to the regional economy.
During the Cold War, over 250,000 US soldiers were stationed in West Germany. Although numbers have declined, the bases remain strategically vital for US operations in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, while also supporting NATO's eastern flank against Russia.
