Bangladesh claimed a historic 104-run victory over Pakistan in the first Test in Dhaka on Tuesday, taking a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. Chasing 268 for victory, Pakistan were bowled out for 163 in the final session.
Debutant Abdullah Fazal top-scored for Pakistan with a valiant 66, but Bangladesh pacer Nahid Rana ran through the batting lineup with career-best figures of 5-40, including a devastating spell of 4-10 in 4.5 overs.
Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto said: “Very happy – proud of all the guys. We have been working hard the last few months, and slowly, we are getting better at Test cricket.” Shanto scored 87 in the second innings and declared at 240-9, setting Pakistan a competitive target.
This was Bangladesh’s first Test win against Pakistan on home soil and their third overall. Shanto also equaled Mushfiqur Rahim’s record of seven Test wins as Bangladesh captain, achieving it in just 17 matches compared to Rahim’s 34.
Pakistan captain Shan Masood admitted: “In the first innings, with bat and ball, we needed to do better. When you have the game in your hands, you have to push the opposition away, but we failed to do that.”
The second Test begins on Saturday in Sylhet.
