Inter Miami confirmed on Monday that Lionel Messi has a left hamstring issue, which surfaced about a week before defending World Cup champion Argentina is set to begin its training camp for this summer's title defense.

The events of Sunday and Monday add intrigue to Argentina's plans. Messi underwent testing on Monday and was diagnosed with 'an overload associated with muscle fatigue in his left hamstring' that kept him from finishing Inter Miami's MLS fixture on Sunday night.

'The timeline for his return to physical activity will depend on his clinical and functional progress,' Inter Miami said. Typically, recovery time varies depending on severity.

Messi was subbed out of Sunday's match against the Philadelphia Union in the 73rd minute. He essentially stopped playing a couple of minutes earlier and was seen grabbing at the back of his left leg. He walked off without assistance and went directly to the locker room.

Argentina has two friendlies scheduled before the World Cup: June 6 against Honduras and June 9 against Iceland. Argentina is in Group J: June 16 vs. Algeria, June 22 vs. Austria, and June 27 vs. Jordan.
