An image circulating on social media allegedly showed a football fan resembling Adolf Hitler during Germany's 7-1 win over Curacao in the FIFA World Cup. The image garnered millions of views across platforms.

However, DW Fact Check found the image to be fake and AI-manipulated. A review of the original broadcast showed the same group of fans celebrating, but without any Hitler lookalike; instead, a gray-haired man was present.

The image was created using AI tools, including OpenAI's ChatGPT. OpenAI's analysis detected a SynthID watermark. Google Gemini and X's Grok also confirmed the image was digitally altered.

This fake image is part of a broader trend of disinformation during the World Cup, including fake ticket-selling websites previously exposed by DW.
