Liverpool's US-based owner Fenway Sports Group (FSG) has confirmed it received an approach from a consortium led by British-Indian investor Amit Bhatia for a strategic minority investment in the Premier League club.

Bhatia, the son-in-law of Indian steel billionaire Lakshmi Mittal, is heading the consortium interested in buying into the 20-time English champions. The Financial Times reported that Bhatia has hired advisers, and the deal could value Liverpool at more than $6 billion.

Just hours after Bhatia's interest emerged, the 46-year-old stepped down as director and co-owner of English Championship side Queens Park Rangers (QPR), where he spent 18 seasons. He will transfer his ownership to majority owner Ruben Gnanalingam.

Bhatia said his discussions with FSG are at an early stage with no deal yet struck. FSG bought Liverpool for £300 million ($400 million) in 2010.

Any investment from Bhatia would aim to further position Liverpool for success, following FSG's 2023 sale of a minority stake to global sports investment firm Dynasty, valued at between $100 million and $200 million at the time.
