An ex-OpenAI engineer accused of covertly planting a recording device in a high-level executive conference room appears to have received substantial backing from the government of Saudi Arabia, United States prosecutors have claimed in recent court filings.

Federal authorities allege that the 35-year-old defendant, Abdulrahman Alfozan, maintained frequent communications with members of the Saudi ruling circle, who purportedly recruited him for advanced artificial intelligence initiatives. Prosecutors have urged a federal judge to keep Alfozan in custody ahead of trial, citing a significant flight risk.

According to court documents, after Alfozan's arrest, a Saudi military official allegedly financed a one-way flight for his wife and young son to relocate back to the kingdom. Investigators assert that the defendant went to great lengths to build customized, encrypted recording devices to intercept sensitive discussions involving top OpenAI executives and visiting government officials.

The high-profile case underscores mounting security vulnerabilities surrounding critical artificial intelligence research amid fierce geopolitical and corporate competition. Prosecutors indicated that the investigation remains active and that additional charges could potentially be brought against the defendant.
