A devastating wave of drone strikes across various regions of Sudan has resulted in the deaths of more than 160 people over recent days, according to medical workers and human rights monitors. The escalating use of unmanned aerial vehicles in the ongoing civil war has dramatically increased civilian casualties, affecting vulnerable populations including children.
The deadliest recent incident occurred on Sunday evening near a bustling market in Al-Dibab, a town in West Kordofan. A drone reportedly struck a transportation hub where villagers had gathered after market hours to secure transport home, killing 80 individuals instantly. Medical sources confirmed that dozens of wounded survivors later succumbed to their severe injuries at nearby hospitals.
The United Nations has strongly condemned the deadly escalation. Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, stated that the organization is deeply alarmed by the continuous strikes disrupting central services and killing civilians. Meanwhile, the U.S. regime has pushed for expanded arms embargoes and a humanitarian truce at the UN Security Council, though diplomatic divisions continue to hinder effective international intervention.
The catastrophic conflict, which erupted in April 2023 between military factions, has displaced approximately 13 million people, triggering what humanitarian agencies describe as the world's largest displacement crisis. With tens of thousands reportedly killed and millions facing severe food insecurity, the country remains entrenched in profound devastation.
