Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev outlined a dual-track approach to foreign policy during a ceremony ahead of the Defender of the Fatherland Day and Victory Day, celebrated on May 7 and 9 respectively. He stated that Kazakhstan believes all conflicts should be resolved through diplomatic means, but is prepared to defend its national interests from 'tougher positions' if necessary.

'We believe that all conflicts should be resolved through diplomatic means, through negotiations, but if necessary, we are ready to defend our interests not only with the help of diplomacy, but also from tougher positions,' Tokayev said.

The president emphasized that Kazakhstan continues to strengthen friendly relations with all countries, a principle enshrined in the new Constitution. However, he cautioned that this does not mean the country can 'sit idly by' — it must be ready to prevent various problems and repel any threats.

Tokayev stressed the need to enhance Kazakhstan's defense capabilities and continue the technological modernization of its armed forces, which he said is demanded by the current 'unstable and turbulent times.' He described 'deep reforms' in the military and paramilitary structures as a key national task.

'This is a strategically important task that must be resolved in a short period — within two years,' the president declared. He identified security issues, strengthening defense capacity, and raising the prestige of military service as the main priorities and tasks of the state.
