Uzbekistan has launched an unusual environmental campaign to mark International Earth Day: users' likes and reposts are being converted into real tree plantings on the dried bed of the Aral Sea.

From April 21 to 25, the UN Development Programme (UNDP) in Uzbekistan is running the 'One Click = One Tree' campaign in support of the Green Aral Sea initiative. The mechanism is simple: every interaction with campaign posts—like, comment, or repost—'unlocks' the planting of one saxaul tree. Some 1,500 seedlings have already been purchased with support from Tashkent International School.

The main goal is to restore the ecosystem of a region where the environmental crisis remains one of the most acute problems. Once the world's fourth-largest lake, the Aral Sea has lost about 90% of its volume, giving way to the Aralkum Desert—a source of salt and dust storms that worsen human health and environmental conditions.

Saxaul, planted under the project, helps stabilize soil, reduce erosion and salt spread, and contributes to ecosystem restoration and carbon sequestration. Since 2022, more than 925,000 such trees have been planted.

After reaching the current goal, users can further support the project via the Every.org platform, directing funds to additional greening of the area.
