Uzbekistan is set to tighten responsibility for violations related to illegal border crossing, including the use of underground structures and tunnels.
The relevant bill was passed in the first reading by deputies of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis. The document provides for amendments and additions to the Criminal and Criminal Procedure Codes and aims to strengthen measures for protecting the state border, ensuring public safety, and safeguarding the country's economic stability.
According to the initiative, liability will be increased for the illegal movement of goods, foreign currency, precious metals, and other items across the state border, as well as for evading customs control.
The use of illegally built underground structures, tunnels, or other infrastructure to violate customs legislation is proposed to be considered an aggravating circumstance.
The bill also provides for stricter penalties for illegal exit from the country, entry into Uzbekistan, or crossing the state border using such objects.
A separate norm proposes to establish criminal liability for the construction of illegal underground structures and tunnels, creation of necessary infrastructure, their operation, and financing of such activities.
After revision, the document will be submitted for further consideration by parliament.
