From May 1 to May 12, traffic patrol officers in Uzbekistan detected 170 violations involving the transport of children under 7 years old. In all cases, drivers exceeded the permitted vehicle capacity, according to Zoer Yuldashev, spokesman for the Road Safety Service.
A total of 3,872 children were transported in these 170 vehicles, averaging 23 minors per vehicle.
In Syrdarya region, a driver whose license had been revoked was detained while transporting 23 children in a Damas minibus. In Namangan, traffic police stopped a similar vehicle driving in the wrong lane; the driver had no license, and 18 children were inside. During the investigation, the head of the kindergarten where the inspectors arrived reportedly used physical force and insulted the officers.
Previously, an incident in Bukhara region was reported where an intoxicated driver of an Isuzu bus carrying 40 children failed to stop on the first demand of traffic police.
In Navoi region, a small Matiz car overturned with 14 children inside, including the driver's three-month-old baby. The driver, a kindergarten director without a license, died. The children were hospitalized with various injuries.
