A Tashkent court has sentenced the driver of a HOWO truck to three years in prison for fatally striking a 21-year-old bicycle courier in February. The driver was also banned from driving for two years.
The tragedy occurred on February 15 at around 6:00 PM at the intersection of the Tashkent Ring Road (TKAD) and Chorbog Street. The 57-year-old truck driver, while turning right, hit a cyclist traveling in the same direction who worked as a courier.
During the trial, it was established that the driver began the turn in a location where such a maneuver is prohibited for trucks. Additionally, he failed to ensure the maneuver was safe and did not give way to other road users. A forensic auto-technical examination confirmed that these traffic violations caused the fatal accident.
The young man died at the scene from his injuries. According to the forensic medical examination, the cause of death was a heart rupture caused by multiple severe injuries to the chest, abdomen, and limbs.
During the proceedings, the driver fully admitted his guilt and expressed sincere remorse. He stated that he works for the company Chilonzor Beton Savdo and was driving an empty company truck at the time of the accident. He explained that he turned under a prohibitory sign because the company's mechanic assured him that service vehicles were allowed to enter the base that way, and drivers routinely used that route.
The court also learned details about the victim. He was a first-year law student at the private Beruniy University and worked part-time as a courier through the Yandex Go service.
The victim's father stated that the truck driver's company paid the family $500 in financial aid and compensated the owner of the bicycle. He also said he had no property claims against the defendant.
Despite this, the court found the driver guilty of violating traffic safety rules resulting in death. He was sentenced to three years in a penal colony and banned from driving for two years.
Before the verdict, the man was free on bail of 8.24 million soums. However, after the sentence was read, he was taken into custody directly in the courtroom. The bail was ordered to be returned to the defendant's relatives.
