Authorities in the capital have reported widespread compliance issues following intensified fare evasion checks across Tashkent's public transport network. According to official figures, inspectors identified over 2,100 passengers traveling without tickets across eight specific bus routes within a span of just six days, highlighting persistent challenges in enforcing transport discipline.
The focused inspections targeted routes numbered 42, 56, 74, 84, 120, 169, 174, and 177. Between October 28 and November 2, enforcement officers drew up 2,152 administrative protocols against individuals who failed to validate their fares. The highest concentrations of violations were recorded on route No. 174 with 291 cases, route No. 120 with 286 cases, and routes No. 56 and No. 169 with 284 cases each.
Interestingly, the aggressive enforcement measures reportedly failed to suppress passenger volumes, with certain lines experiencing significant growth in ridership. For instance, route No. 174 saw a 32.4% surge in passenger numbers. Overall, the targeted routes accommodated 326,400 passengers and completed 6,500 trips over the six-day inspection period, reflecting a heavy reliance on the municipal transit system despite prevailing payment issues.
Transport officials stated that monitoring operations will continue indefinitely, reminding commuters of their legal obligation to pay for every trip. This comes on the heels of alarming statistics from October, during which authorities issued over 21,000 administrative penalties for fare evasion across the city.
