According to an annual report released by the Afghanistan Journalists Center, the country recorded 207 cases of violations of media freedom and violence against journalists in 2025. This figure represents an increase of over 20% compared to the previous year, highlighting a deteriorating trend in press freedom conditions in the region and raising significant concerns among international observers about the safety and rights of media workers.

The report details that among the documented incidents are the killings of two journalists, the injury of another, 183 threats against media representatives and editorial offices, and 21 cases of detention of journalists and media activists. These statistics underscore the hazardous environment for journalistic activities in Afghanistan and the pressing need for enhanced security measures, as the Afghan government's policies on press freedom and protection of journalists' rights continue to face scrutiny and criticism from global human rights organizations.

The center published the report to coincide with Afghanistan's National Journalist Day, focusing on the state of freedom of expression in the country. The findings serve as a crucial resource for monitoring issues observed by regional and international bodies, given the ongoing debates over media regulations and the alleged challenges in implementing effective safeguards, which purportedly aim to uphold democratic values but have shown limited success in curbing violence and intimidation against the press.
