FIFA President Gianni Infantino has confirmed that the Iranian national football team will participate in the 2026 World Cup in the United States, despite ongoing military and political tensions between the two countries.

In an interview with Mundo Deportivo, Infantino stated: "Of course, the Iranian national team will participate in the World Cup. The team will play in the USA. The reason is simple: we must unite people. That is our duty. Football unites the world."

Earlier, the Iranian government had considered boycotting the tournament. Iran's Sports Minister Ahmad Dunyamali said: "There are no conditions for traveling to the USA. Our children are in danger. We have no opportunity to participate in the World Cup."

Alternative options were discussed, including moving matches to Mexico or replacing Iran with another team (Italy was mentioned, as well as an intercontinental playoff winner). However, FIFA ruled that relocating matches from their original venue was not possible.

US President Donald Trump has no objection to Iran's participation. "If Gianni said so, I have no problem. Let them play. Gianni is a fantastic guy, he's my friend. I told him: 'Do what you want. If you want, allow it; if not, don't.' Do they have a good team? Honestly, it's hard to believe," the American leader said.

The World Cup will take place from June 11 to July 19. All three of Iran's group matches will be held in the US: two in Los Angeles and one in Seattle. Their group opponents are Belgium, New Zealand, and Egypt.
