On May 7, 2025, Amal Sobeih gave birth to her daughter Sana in Gaza City. That same day, her husband Yahya Sobeih, a journalist, was killed in an Israeli airstrike.

Yahya had spent hours with his wife and newborn, taking photos and sharing them on social media. He was reportedly distributing sweets to celebrate the birth when the strike hit a commercial area in central Gaza, killing at least 17 people.

Amal learned of his death from a news headline. "I felt the blood freeze in my veins. I screamed uncontrollably," she said.

The war had already claimed the lives of her brother, his wife and three children, as well as her sister and her four children.

Now displaced to southern Gaza with her three children, Amal lives in a tent and works as a journalist for the same media company as her late husband.

She struggles to explain to her daughter Sana that the day she was born was also the day she lost her father. "If Yahya were here, he would have celebrated her. Sana carries no blame," Amal said.
