Two former Chinese defense ministers, Wei Fenghe and Li Shangfu, have been sentenced to death for bribery, with a two-year reprieve, according to the Xinhua News Agency.
Both officials were expelled from the ruling Communist Party in 2024 for serious disciplinary violations. The court found them guilty of using their positions to accept massive bribes.
Li Shangfu was also stripped of political rights for life, and all his personal property was confiscated. The verdict underscores China's intensified anti-corruption campaign.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Justice announced the resumption of the federal death penalty, including the reintroduction of firing squads as a method of execution and expedited review procedures for capital cases.
