US President Donald Trump, during an official visit to China, held talks in Beijing with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Opening the meeting, Xi Jinping stated his intention to discuss key issues of significance for both countries and the world, and to bring bilateral relations to a new stage.
According to the Chinese leader, the world is undergoing a period of unprecedented change, and the international situation remains unstable. "China and the US must jointly respond to the challenges of the times," Xi stressed.
Xi noted that Beijing and Washington have far more common interests than differences, and called for viewing relations not as competition but as a partnership based on mutual benefit and shared development.
The Chinese leader said that good China-US relations serve the interests of the entire international community. "We are ready to set the right course for the huge ship of China-US relations and make 2026 a historic turning point," he stated.
Xi paid special attention to trade and economic issues, emphasizing that there are no winners in trade wars and that any differences should be resolved through equal consultations.
On Taiwan, Xi stressed that maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait remains one of the most important common interests of China and the US.
Donald Trump, in turn, said he expected "very important talks" and expressed confidence in further improvement of relations. "When we faced difficulties, we always knew how to overcome them. Together, a beautiful future awaits us," the US president remarked.
Earlier, an official welcoming ceremony for Trump was held at Tiananmen Square, followed by talks in bilateral and expanded formats.
The sides are expected to discuss not only trade and economic issues but also the situation around Taiwan and the conflict following US and Israeli strikes on Iran.
After the talks, Trump will visit the Temple of Heaven in Beijing and attend an official dinner. A new meeting in the format of a tea conversation and working lunch is scheduled for May 15.
