The Swedish government announced a deal to purchase four new frigates from France's Naval Group, marking one of the country's largest defense investments since the 1980s. The warships will be the largest surface combatants in the Swedish navy.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson stated at a press conference that the deal triples Sweden's air defense capability. The first frigate is expected by 2030, with the remaining three by 2035. Each ship is estimated to cost around €0.9 billion, totaling over €3.5 billion.
Sweden, which joined NATO in March 2024, is rapidly enhancing its military readiness. The new frigates have a 40-year lifespan and will be named HSwMS Lulea, Norrköpping, Trelleborg, and Halmstad.
Defense Minister Pal Jonson cited quick delivery, cost-sharing with France and Greece, and a proven air defense system as reasons for selecting Naval Group over rivals Navantia and Babcock/Saab. The ships will integrate Swedish weapons, including from Saab.
Sweden currently operates five Visby-class corvettes and two older Gävle-class corvettes. The country aims to increase defense spending to 3.5% of GDP by 2030, ahead of NATO targets.
