Thai authorities have decided to reduce the visa-free regime for citizens of more than 90 countries and revert to previous entry rules, according to The Nation, citing Minister of Tourism and Sports Surasak Pancharoenvorakul after a cabinet meeting.

The decision cancels the 60-day visa-free stay scheme introduced in 2024 to boost tourism. Most countries will now revert to a 30-day visa-free stay.

For some countries, the visa-free period may be shortened to 15 days. Specific conditions will be determined by the Visa Policy Committee, which will review rules based on economic factors and security concerns.

The government emphasized that the updated visa policy will prioritize "quality of tourists" and enhanced entry control over increasing tourist numbers. The prime minister allegedly ordered a review of the visa system to improve security and efficiency in the tourism sector.

The 60-day visa-free regime was introduced in 2024 as part of tourism support measures. However, ministry statistics show that most foreign tourists stay an average of nine days, significantly less than the allowed period.

Authorities are also considering a 300 baht fee for foreign tourists, with funds planned for tourism infrastructure development and control systems.

Final country lists and updated visa-free rules will be approved after further review by the Visa Policy Committee.
