A former chief executive of Chinese state-owned oil and gas company CNOOC has been sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve for bribery.

Yuan Guangyu, 67, retired in September 2019. The court found that between 2001 and 2022, he illegally received money and valuables worth more than 152 million yuan ($21 million) for helping secure contracts, business deals, and personnel decisions.

He confessed to the crimes, voluntarily reported previously unknown offenses, and returned the illegal proceeds. The court considered these as mitigating factors.

Yuan was also stripped of political rights for life and had all his property confiscated. In China, a death sentence with reprieve is typically commuted to life imprisonment if the convict commits no further crimes within two years.

In May, two former Chinese defense ministers were also sentenced to death with reprieve for bribery.
