Canada's men's national team defeated South Africa 1-0 in the first match of the World Cup round of 32, securing a spot in the next stage of the tournament.
The only goal of the match came in stoppage time, with Stephen Eustáquio scoring in the 90+2nd minute to give Canada the victory.
Both teams were playing in the World Cup knockout stage for the first time. South Africa had never advanced past the group stage, even at their home tournament in 2010. Canada had failed to progress from the group stage in 1986 and 2022.
Canada will now face the winner of the Netherlands vs. Morocco match in the round of 16.
