Following the passing of former Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the story of one of his most ambitious projects – the Al Jazeera Media Network – has been revisited. The author, who was involved in the channel's early days, recounts how the emir personally summoned him and revealed his intention to establish a new television news channel named Al Jazeera.

Sheikh Hamad envisioned a channel with a wide margin of freedom, distinct from the typical Arab media landscape. It was to operate on principles of free journalism, akin to professional international media outlets. Construction of the building began near Qatar Television, equipped with broadcasting and satellite communication gear, and a newsroom was prepared.

A board of directors was formed, a director-general appointed, and recruitment of journalists and technical staff commenced. The channel's slogan, “The Opinion and the Other Opinion”, was set, and trial broadcasts started. In late November 1996, the first half-hour news bulletin aired, marking a departure from the norm. Initially, broadcasting was limited to six hours per day.

Signs of success emerged early, as journalists and the public began talking about a new voice unlike any in the Arab world. Sheikh Hamad visited the channel but never interfered in coverage or programs, as long as professional rules were followed. This fostered a strong sense of belonging among staff, who saw the project as a national endeavor to convey truth from the field.

The author notes that the emir's belief in independent media served as a protective umbrella for Al Jazeera, which faced opposition from Arab and international spheres. Despite pressures, the network continued its independent message. Today, Al Jazeera holds a leading position in traditional and digital media, transforming media equations globally. Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani has upheld his father's legacy, rejecting any interference in editorial policies.
