Police in Gloucestershire, UK, have arrested several men on suspicion of explosives-related offences near RAF Fairford, a military airbase used by US forces. A "major incident" was declared, and residents from a number of properties in Whelford, southwestern England, were evacuated to a nearby leisure centre. The army's specialist explosive ordnance disposal team is currently examining a number of vehicles, according to Gloucestershire police.

Authorities have not disclosed what prompted the arrests, whether any explosives were found, or if the suspected offences are connected to the airbase. A Reuters reporter at the scene said armed police had blocked access to the base's main gate, with equipment placed in front of entry points. About 30 emergency vehicles, including police cars, ambulances, and fire engines, were stationed in the nearby town of Fairford.

Gloucestershire police stated they would like "to reassure people that we believe this incident is contained." The US Air Force acknowledged awareness of the reports but declined to discuss specific security measures. A spokesperson said the 501st Combat Support Wing and other US units in the UK remain vigilant and will take steps needed to protect personnel and their families.

In March, three US B-1B Lancer bombers touched down at RAF Fairford after what is believed to be the first US strike mission against Iran launched from a British base. In July, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps warned that bases used to launch attacks on Iran could be treated as legitimate targets. However, authorities have not linked Sunday's arrests to Iran or said RAF Fairford was a target.
