Iranian authorities have announced a three-member interim leadership council to run the government after Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed in Israeli-US strikes.
Article 111 of Iran's Constitution authorizes a temporary leadership council to assume the supreme leader's duties until a successor is elected. The council consists of President Masoud Pezeshkian, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei, and Guardian Council member Ayatollah Alireza Arafi.
Alireza Arafi – A member of the Guardian Council since 2019, deputy chairman of the Assembly of Experts, leads Friday prayers in Qom and heads the national seminary system.
Masoud Pezeshkian – A 71-year-old reformist politician and heart surgeon, elected president in 2024, previously served as health minister and parliament member.
Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei – Head of the judiciary since 2021, former intelligence minister and prosecutor-general, regarded as a hardline conservative figure.
The council will govern until a new supreme leader is chosen, as Iran reels from war following Khamenei's death.
