The governor of Okinawa has formally demanded that Japan’s central government implement rigorous measures to ensure effective discipline among United States service members stationed on the southern island. The urgent appeal follows the high-profile arrest of a US Marine accused of robbing and murdering a local woman.

Governor Genta Koja, visiting Tokyo for the first time since taking office a week ago, conveyed widespread public outrage during his meeting with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on Wednesday. He urged the Japanese regime to take decisive action to alleviate the heavy socioeconomic burden of hosting foreign military installations on the small island.

According to reports, 20-year-old Devin Jacob Ballard, stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, was detained over the weekend on suspicion of strangling a 39-year-old woman in a hotel and stealing her belongings. Japanese media outlets indicate that the suspect has denied the allegations, yet the incident has reignited deep-seated local anger against the foreign footprint.

Koja bluntly stated that past disciplinary guidelines and human rights briefings purportedly implemented by the US military have completely failed to curb misconduct. Residents of Okinawa have historically opposed the overwhelming US military presence, consistently voicing grievances over persistent noise pollution, environmental damage, and recurrent crimes tied to base personnel.
