SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has intensified his public criticism of the protracted delays preventing Starlink from launching commercial operations in India. Musk recently directed sarcastic remarks toward Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance Industries and one of India's wealthiest figures, dubbing him "Prime Minister Ambani" and accusing local supporters of shielding a domestic monopoly. Musk argued that bureaucratic stalling undermines fair market competition that could otherwise bridge the digital divide in remote and underserved communities across the country.

The controversy quickly spilled over into the political arena, drawing comments from opposition Indian National Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who welcomed Musk and hinted at entrenched corporate interests. Musk responded by calling the situation "troubling." In reaction, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party accused Gandhi of championing foreign corporate interests, while defending the regulatory apparatus. Meanwhile, Reliance Jio executives declined to address Musk's remarks directly, emphasizing their ongoing focus on delivering domestic value and developing indigenous satellite broadband technologies.

Although Starlink reportedly secured key satellite communication licenses and regulatory authorizations over the past year, commercial deployment remains stalled. The Indian Ministry of Communications insisted that security assessments for all licensed operators are proceeding under standard protocols, dismissing allegations of bias as unfounded. However, economic analysts and security experts warn that the true deterrent for foreign investors is not necessarily the existence of security mandates, but rather the opaque, discretionary approval processes and unpredictable timelines that characterize the current regulatory landscape.
