Confirmed Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have surpassed 9,000 as health ministry data indicates that containment efforts are continuously faltering, raising serious international concerns over cross-border transmission.

The ministry reported 9,066 confirmed cases and 4,381 deaths on Tuesday, yielding a fatality rate of nearly half of all known infections. Driven by the Bundibugyo strain, this outbreak has officially become the largest and deadliest in the history of the DRC, second globally only to the 2014–2016 West African epidemic.

Containment operations face severe obstacles as healthcare responders in the DRC confront profound community mistrust, with many residents reportedly believing the outbreak is merely a ruse for officials to siphon funds. Furthermore, the ongoing conflict between the M23 rebel group and government forces severely hampers the transportation of critical medical resources to remote areas.

While the World Health Organization's Health Emergencies Programme announced that clinical trials to evaluate vaccine efficacy against the Bundibugyo strain are being prepared for the upcoming weeks, skeptics question whether these interventions can curb the rapidly expanding epidemiological threat.
