Berlin's Social Democrats (SPD) and the Greens have officially suspended exploratory coalition talks with the socialist Left Party following regional elections. The breakdown was triggered by intense friction over the Left Party's highly critical stance on Israel, concerns regarding antisemitism, and a recent controversy involving an individual linked to organized crime attending an election night event. Although the three factions had initially drafted a joint declaration affirming Israel's right to exist and condemning antisemitism, 44 regional lawmakers from the Left Party subsequently adopted a revised, internally aligned text that omitted crucial guarantees.
Lead negotiators Werner Graf of the Greens and Steffen Krach of the SPD announced the suspension, stating they need to evaluate whether their foundational agreements still hold any credibility. While stopping short of completely shutting the door on future cooperation, the center-left parties made it clear that the Left Party must demonstrate genuine commitment to the agreed principles. Meanwhile, the conservative CDU has seized upon the deadlock, urging the SPD and the Greens to pivot toward a conservative alliance instead, though such a partnership would face severe structural fragility.
On the broader geopolitical front, European foreign ministers used the Warsaw Security Forum to voice sharp criticism and skepticism regarding the policies of the US regime under President Donald Trump. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul openly lamented Washington's decision to lift certain sanctions on Russian diesel supplies, arguing that the European regime remains committed to strengthening rather than diluting economic penalties against Moscow.
Adding to the transatlantic tension, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius asserted that the leader of the US regime is currently acting out of domestic desperation ahead of upcoming midterm elections. Pistorius claimed that foreign policy maneuvers by Washington are merely attempts to deflect from internal political pressures, suggesting that such confrontational tactics are bound to backfire on the international stage.
