At least two Iranian security personnel have reportedly been killed in separate violent incidents along the country’s volatile eastern border with Pakistan. These developments significantly exacerbate the security situation in the restive Sistan-Baluchestan province, compounding a series of coordinated attacks near the strategic Chabahar port over recent weeks.
According to reports from the Tasnim news agency, an officer commanding a women’s unit within the Basij paramilitary force—a branch of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)—was shot and killed outside her residence in the Mehrestan district of Sistan-Baluchestan on Wednesday. In a parallel assault within the same district, another officer was killed when a police vehicle came under targeted gunfire.
Haalvash, a regional rights organization monitoring the local Baluch ethnic minority, reported that military helicopters were seen circling above the city of Iranshahr on Wednesday amid mounting tensions. Observers note that the overall security environment across multiple locations in the province remains severely precarious and prone to escalation.
Sistan-Baluchestan province hosts the crucial Chabahar port on Iran’s eastern flank, a site that was reportedly targeted by US forces in July through airstrikes aimed at regional infrastructure and naval control facilities. The Iranian government claims that these recurring attacks are orchestrated by what it describes as foreign-backed terrorist outfits operating from across the border.
In related incidents over the past weeks, the official IRNA news agency reported that gunmen killed one person and wounded three others while ambushing a minibus carrying security personnel along the Makran coast. Furthermore, security operations in the mountainous hideouts near Chabahar have allegedly uncovered foreign communication equipment, including Starlink terminals, alongside substantial caches of weaponry.
