️ At least 14 people have reportedly lost their lives and seven others sustained injuries following the catastrophic collapse of an illegal gold mine in southwestern Colombia. Local authorities stated that the accident occurred in the rural Chambero sector within the municipality of Santa Barbara de Iscuande, situated in the department of Narino.

️ Search and rescue operations have officially concluded, according to Narino Governor Luis Alfonso Escobar, though the situation remains critical. Jorge Tovar Castillo, a disaster response official in the region, claimed that an additional 12 to 15 miners remain unaccounted for following the disaster, raising concerns that the final death toll could rise significantly.

️ Emergency response efforts have been severely hampered by geographical isolation. Santa Barbara de Iscuande is surrounded by dense rainforests and is accessible solely by boat or small aircraft, making rapid deployment of heavy rescue equipment virtually impossible. Governor Escobar acknowledged via social media that the site was an informal operation, highlighting the persistent dangers of unregulated mining.

️ Informal and unregulated extraction practices are widespread across rural regions of Colombia, where operations routinely bypass adequate safety infrastructure, resulting in frequent and deadly accidents. This incident follows a similar tragedy in August, when 13 people died in another mining collapse within the same department of Narino.
