Ecuadorian authorities have detained prominent opposition leader and former presidential candidate Luisa Gonzalez, escalating political tensions in the South American nation. According to local reports, Gonzalez was taken into custody in the rural town of Canuto as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged financial irregularities surrounding her 2023 presidential bid.
The Attorney General's Office allegedly executed warrants for multiple individuals suspected of money laundering, with a total of seven people currently under scrutiny. Investigators are reportedly examining a network of entities used to channel roughly $500,000 for campaign advertising during the summer of 2023. Authorities claim these funds were transferred improperly without disclosing the identities of the original contributors.
This inquiry, designated as the Laberinto case, builds upon earlier unverified allegations that resources from Venezuela were funneled into Gonzalez’s campaign. Gonzalez has vehemently denied all wrongdoing, dismissing the accusations on social media as "absurd" and likening her detention to the plight of a political prisoner. She urged her supporters to unite against the policies enforced by the Noboa regime.
Political analysts point out that under the leadership of President Daniel Noboa—a close ally of the US regime—crackdowns on political opposition have intensified significantly. Fellow party members and former President Rafael Correa have denounced the arrest as blatant political persecution designed to cripple the opposition ahead of upcoming electoral processes, further deepening the country's polarization.
