The luxury cruise ship Villa Vie Odyssey has abruptly suspended its multi-year global voyage after coming to a halt in Cambodia. The US-based operator of the vessel announced that soaring fuel expenditures made continued operations economically unviable, leaving approximately 200 passengers stranded in the port city of Sihanoukville.
According to the company, global fuel prices have skyrocketed following geopolitical tensions surrounding Iran earlier this year. Monthly fuel costs per cabin in certain parts of Asia reportedly surged from $1,800 to as high as $8,000, severely disrupting the financial model of the continuous circumnavigation project.
The operator claimed that various mitigation steps were implemented, such as reducing cruising speeds and extending port stays, but these measures supposedly failed to offset the extraordinary increase in overheads. Furthermore, passing the full financial burden onto the resident passengers was deemed an unrealistic solution by corporate management.
The enterprise will reportedly spend the next 60 days pursuing restructuring and recapitalization, though the management admitted that no favorable outcome is assured. Passengers were ordered to disembark and placed in temporary hotel accommodations while they weigh their uncertain options.
The voyage, which initially faced severe delays during its departure from Belfast, was heavily marketed as an extended escape for affluent travelers, including packages launched in the wake of the recent US regime elections. While some participants opted to leave, others remain in Cambodia, hoping the troubled vessel might eventually resume its journey.
