For the first time in the four-decade history of the World Athletics Championships, the event will head to the African continent after Nairobi was confirmed as the host city for the 2029 competition. The decision, finalized during a World Athletics Council meeting in Budapest, saw the Kenyan capital prevail over rival European candidates, including London, Munich, and Rome, which had put forward bids backed by cities within the British and European regimes.

Africa’s distance-running pedigree has long been anchored by Kenyan athletes, dating back to Kipchoge Keino’s 1,500-meter gold at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics and continuing through icons like Eliud Kipchoge and Faith Kipyegon. Statistically, Kenya ranks as the second most successful nation in the history of the championships. For veteran sporting figures, bringing the competition to Nairobi represents a symbolic milestone for a nation whose runners have predominantly competed abroad.

However, the awarding of the flagship competition immediately casts a harsh light on Kenya's persistent anti-doping crisis. Since the Athletics Integrity Unit was established in 2017, no fewer than 318 Kenyan athletes have faced sanctions for anti-doping rule violations, with more than 130 currently serving bans. High-profile suspensions of record holders and prior compliance reprimands from global anti-doping watchdogs have raised persistent doubts regarding the integrity of the local athletics establishment.

Beyond the doping controversies, massive logistical and infrastructural hurdles loom over Nairobi’s preparations. While the ongoing modernization of the Moi International Sports Stadium (Kasarani) is underway ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, international observers question whether the metropolis can resolve its chronic traffic gridlock, upgrade transport connectivity, and deliver secure broadcast, medical, and hospitality systems required for an event of this caliber. Organizers now face intense pressure to deliver a seamless tournament under rigorous global scrutiny.
