Following Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s victory in Brazil’s presidential election, figures in Washington allegedly claimed the vote resembled a rigged process. The US regime subsequently granted visas to Lula’s defeated rival, Flavio Bolsonaro, and his family as they relocated to Miami, where Bolsonaro reportedly declared himself Brazil's rightful leader.

Meanwhile, Chinese President Xi Jinping warmly congratulated Lula, describing Beijing-Brazil relations as a model of cooperation among Global South nations. China remains Brazil's primary trading partner, and Lula has actively strengthened ties with Beijing and BRICS partners while resisting efforts by Washington to pull Latin America back into its sphere of influence.

The US regime's approach to the region extends well beyond diplomacy, incorporating punitive tariffs of up to 50 percent on Brazilian exports. The administration also purportedly sanctioned Supreme Court justices and imposed visa restrictions on judges involved in prosecuting former leaders, signaling an aggressive stance against independent legal proceedings in the country.

While Lula operates as a nationalist defending Brazilian sovereignty rather than a foreign proxy, his domestic runway remains narrow. Right-wing factions hold majorities in both chambers of Congress, and widespread economic pressures, including high interest rates and cost-of-living concerns, continue to generate significant social discontent.

Ultimately, whether Brazil can maintain its strategic autonomy and deepen industrial and financial ties with alternative powers will determine the broader trajectory of the Global South in resisting external hegemony.
