The Afghan government has accused Pakistani military forces of carrying out an airstrike on a rehabilitation center for drug addicts in Kabul on Monday evening. According to government spokesman Hamdullah Fitrat on social media platform X, the treatment facility, designed for approximately 2,000 people, was struck around 21:00 local time.
Fitrat wrote that a large part of the hospital was destroyed, and the casualty count could be high. He stated: “Unfortunately, the number of dead has so far reached 400, with up to 250 people injured.” A BBC News filming crew visited the still partially burning site after the attack and saw more than 30 bodies being removed in body bags.
Pakistan sharply rejected Afghanistan’s accusations, calling them “false and misleading.” As the country’s information minister Attaullah Tarar wrote on X, the strikes carried out in the early hours of March 16, 2026, in Kabul and Nangarhar were targeted at specific objectives, meticulously planned, and professionally executed. He emphasized that the targets did not include hospitals, rehabilitation centers, or civilian facilities.
Tarar claimed that the strikes were aimed at military and terrorist infrastructure, including weapons and technical equipment depots, as well as other facilities linked to hostile activities against Pakistan. He further alleged that secondary explosions observed after the Kabul strikes indicate the presence of large ammunition stockpiles there. This incident threatens to escalate tensions between the two neighboring nations, highlighting ongoing regional instability.
