A car drove into a crowd in the eastern German city of Leipzig on Monday afternoon, killing two people and injuring several others, local authorities said. The incident occurred in the central Grimmaische Straße area, a busy pedestrian zone.
Leipzig Mayor Burkhard Jung confirmed that the suspected perpetrator was apprehended, but the motive remains unclear. He stated that authorities are investigating all possibilities and urged the public to remain calm.
Leipzig fire chief Axel Schuh reported that 22 people were injured, two of them seriously. Emergency services responded swiftly, with approximately 40 firefighters and 40 paramedics on the scene, supported by two helicopters.
Police said the driver fled after the incident but was arrested shortly afterward. They assured the public that there is no further danger from the suspect. By 17:35 local time, police declared the area safe and cordoned off the square for investigation.
