Tajikistan has for the first time in its history nominated its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for 2028–2029. The announcement was made by the republic's Foreign Minister Sirojiddin Muhriddin during his speech at the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

The head of the foreign policy department emphasized that membership in the Security Council is a high responsibility for preserving the organization's Charter and maintaining international peace. In his address, he also congratulated Kyrgyzstan on its election as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2027–2028 and recalled Tajikistan's initiatives concerning glacier protection, water resources, counter-terrorism, and the development of artificial intelligence.

Furthermore, Tajikistan supported the "UN-80" reform process launched by Secretary-General António Guterres in March 2025. The program aims to enhance the effectiveness of the global organization through resource optimization, revision of outdated mandates, and structural transformations.

It is worth recalling that Uzbekistan had previously nominated its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for 2035–2036. This was stated by Saida Mirziyoyeva, head of the Presidential Administration, speaking on behalf of the country at the same session.
