Uzbekistan's cotton harvest in 2024 is approaching record levels, driven by the country's agricultural reforms and adoption of modern technologies. According to state statistics, the current season is expected to see a 15% increase in yield compared to last year, solidifying Uzbekistan's position as one of the world's leading cotton producers. The leadership of the Ministry of Agriculture attributes this growth to “efficient water use, expansion of new varieties, and additional subsidies for farmers.”
However, the cotton industry continues to face challenges, including outdated irrigation systems and volatility in international market prices. Experts emphasize that the country needs to focus on increasing cotton processing capacities, as a significant portion of raw material is currently exported abroad, reducing added value. The chairman of the agricultural producers' association stated: “We must not just export cotton but process it in local industry, which will bring more benefit to the economy.”
The government announced new initiatives to diversify the cotton sector, including promoting organic cotton farming and developing eco-tourism projects. These measures aim to boost employment in rural areas and protect the environment. Nevertheless, implementation is progressing slowly, as many farmers continue to rely on traditional methods. In the future, Uzbekistan is expected to enhance technological upgrades and international cooperation for sustainable development of the cotton industry.
