Uzbekistan is set to launch a high-speed Hyundai Rotem train on the Tashkent-Khiva route starting May 1. In an interview with the “Uzbekistan 24” TV channel, Transport Minister Ilhom Mahkamov revealed that the country has purchased six such trains, with the first one named “Sardar Jaloliddin Manguberdi.” The train consists of 7 carriages, can accommodate approximately 390 passengers, and is capable of reaching speeds up to 260 km/h.

According to the minister, the project’s implementation was made possible through infrastructure modernization initiatives led by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, including the electrification of the railway network to Khiva and its adaptation for high-speed traffic. As a result, travel time will be reduced from the current 13 hours to about 7 hours. Five more trains are expected to be delivered by the end of the year.

The train features a white exterior with tinted windows and is decorated with blue, green, and red stripes referencing the Uzbek flag. It is adapted to the country’s climate, being resistant to dust, sharp temperature changes, and sandstorms. Passengers will have access to three service classes: VIP, business, and economy.

The project is financed at an estimated cost of 220.03 million euros, with Uzbekistan contributing 21.3 million euros, the “Uzbekistan Railways” company providing 13.5 million euros, and the Korean Eximbank offering a 40-year loan equivalent to 185.18 million euros in Korean won. The contract for supplying Hyundai Rotem electric trains was signed in June 2024 during the South Korean president’s visit to Uzbekistan.

Future plans include the electrification of the “Miskin-Nukus” railway network, which is expected to reduce travel time from Tashkent to Nukus from 16 to 7 hours. These projects aim to modernize the country’s transport infrastructure and enhance regional connectivity.
