In the Surkhandarya region of Uzbekistan, a fraudster who impersonated a government official to extort money for job placement assistance has been arrested. According to investigative authorities, the individual claimed to be an employee of the Department under the General Prosecutor's Office and alleged connections with officials from the Border Troops of the State Security Service.

The suspect promised a citizen a contract-based military service position and demanded $1,000 (approximately 12.2 million Uzbek soums) in return. On March 21, during an operation, the perpetrator was apprehended while receiving the specified sum, with material evidence seized at the scene.

A criminal case has been initiated against the detainee under Articles 168 ("Fraud") and 211 ("Bribery") of the Criminal Code. An investigation revealed that the individual never worked in any government bodies or the Department under the General Prosecutor's Office, exposing his fraudulent claims.

The General Prosecutor's Office has urged citizens not to trust individuals who present themselves as government employees and demand money for job placement or other services. This warning comes amid a rise in similar fraud cases in the country, often linked to employment-seeking and migration issues.

This incident follows a recent operation by Uzbekistan's Ministry of Internal Affairs, which dismantled a transnational criminal network that lured citizens into labor and sexual slavery under the guise of employment in prestigious Malaysian restaurants. These events highlight ongoing challenges with crime and fraud in the labor migration sector in the region.
