During raids conducted by the State Environmental Control Inspectorate (Ecopolice) in the Tashkent region, serious environmental violations were uncovered at the Almalyk Mining and Metallurgical Combine (AGMK). The investigation revealed that the enterprise illegally stored hazardous production waste in open areas, negatively impacting soil and groundwater.
Additionally, it was established that wastewater treatment facilities at the ore management unit in Angren city, Tashkent region, are operating inefficiently due to worn-out equipment. As a result, wastewater essentially turns into waste and is discharged into the Angren River, posing a threat to the local ecosystem.
In response to these violations, the company has been ordered to pay an additional compensation of 48 billion soums and has received mandatory instructions consisting of 20 points. AGMK representatives stated that they prioritize environmental issues, considering them a key focus in their operations.
In a statement, AGMK noted that the technogenic waste accumulated over years of activity contains significant amounts of valuable components, including precious metals, copper, and zinc. Contracts have been signed with foreign enterprises for processing this waste, which is expected to enable safe disposal and extraction of additional valuable metals in the near future.
Measures are also being implemented regarding the Angren ore management unit's treatment facilities: a pilot project for industrial wastewater treatment has been conducted in collaboration with Finnish company EPSE Oy, and a reconstruction project has been developed to significantly improve treatment efficiency.
