In the first quarter of 2026, Uzbekistan recorded 1,102 road traffic accidents (RTAs), with 346 of these incidents resulting in fatalities. Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs — Head of the Investigation Department Ramazon Ashrapov announced these figures at a press conference on April 11. Fatal outcomes accounted for 31.4% of the cases, highlighting the severity of road safety issues in the country.
In his speech, Ramazon Ashrapov acknowledged problems related to traffic safety as "one of the painful issues in our activities." He analyzed the primary causes of the accidents, noting that 32.9% were due to failure to adhere to speed limits, 22.4% to non-compliance with traffic light requirements, 13.6% to drivers not yielding to pedestrians, and 4.2% to drivers falling asleep while driving.
According to 2025 data, Uzbekistan saw 9,226 RTAs resulting in 2,188 deaths and 8,901 injuries, representing a decrease of less than 1% over the year. However, records from the Public Safety Department YHXX indicate that when calculated per 100,000 population, the number of fatalities decreased from 6.9 in 2021 to 5.7 in 2025, a 17% reduction. These figures suggest some progress in road safety but also point to persistent serious challenges.
Ashrapov emphasized that these statistics serve as a critical warning for the government and public, underscoring the need for additional measures to enhance road safety. The increase in vehicle accidents in the country could have negative economic and social impacts, necessitating ongoing monitoring and the development of effective strategies to address this issue.
