On April 17, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan signed a decree awarding chess player Javohir Sindarov the 'Labor Glory' order. The decree was read out by Prime Minister Abdulla Aripov during a ceremony to welcome the chess player. This action was noted as an official recognition and commendation of Sindarov's success at the Candidates Tournament held in Cyprus.
Sindarov emerged victorious at the Candidates Tournament in Cyprus, which featured the world's top 8 chess players. According to tournament results, he accumulated 10 points out of a possible 14, setting a new record for the competition. The win was secured one round before the tournament's conclusion. Sindarov's result surpassed that of Russian player Ian Nepomniachtchi, who scored 9.5 points out of 14 in the 2022 edition, and he had previously updated the record for number of wins (6).
The young grandmaster will now compete for the chess crown against reigning world champion Dommaraju Gukesh. The match is expected to take place in late 2024, with the exact date and venue for the World Championship match to be announced later by the International Chess Federation (FIDE). Sindarov earned 170,000 euros in prize money for his tournament victory: 70,000 euros for first place and 5,000 euros for each half-point (totaling 100,000 euros).
It is worth recalling that Sindarov was previously awarded the honorary title of 'Honored Athlete of the Republic of Uzbekistan' in November for winning the World Cup, and he also received a three-room apartment, while his coaches were awarded cash prizes. These events highlight the growth and achievements of Uzbek sports on the international stage.
