A large-scale program has been launched in Karakalpakstan to restore the population of the endangered houbara bustard, listed in international and national conservation lists. Up to three thousand rare birds are planned to be released into the wild annually.
The program is implemented in cooperation between Uzbekistan's National Committee for Ecology and Climate Change and Falcon Hunting Solutions. The bird is listed in the Red Book of Uzbekistan, the International Union for Conservation of Nature, and Appendix I of the CITES Convention.
According to the project, between 2,000 and 3,000 individuals are planned to be released annually into the natural habitat in Karakalpakstan. The next stage has already been completed: 893 houbara bustards were released into the Ustyurt steppe in the Kungrad district.
Earlier, Samarkand ecologists released three rescued red-listed birds into the wild.
